The new product is always created in close cooperation with R&D engineers and designers, both in terms of the latest technologies and, of course, ergonomic standards and safety regulations. Have you ever wondered how a tram is produced? First sketches with the basic features and character of the future tram come to life based on technical documentation.

During the design stage, there are always more options created that represent different approaches, styles and emotions.

The drawings are then converted to 3D model to verify their true design and ergonomics in space.

What is also very important is the perspective of both passengers and drivers, what they need and feel. That is something we use as a benchmark and it can lead to the best possible solution in terms of proportions and layout. Not only safety and clarity is our top priority, but vehicles also need to be easy to maintain. Škoda specialists use virtual 3D models at an early stage of development to obtain a realistic visualization of the vehicle.

Virtual reality tools are used for the presentation, which can give the viewer the impression of a real vehicle. This technique is especially helpful in examining the proposed solutions and identifying any shortcomings, which can be more easily fixed at an early stage of the project development.

3D printing is used to create prototypes and scale models, which allow to quickly test and “touch” the designs.

During the manufacturing process of the vehicle, Development & Design of Škoda Transportation provides a wide range of R&D support, from 3D modelling of parts to graphic work or animation.

Along with implementation projects, Škoda Transportation’s Development & Design also works on development projects. A great example is the SAFE NOSE project. As part of this project, we managed to develop and subsequently produce the front of the tram, in the form of a functional sample, with an increased level of safety in terms of collision with pedestrians. Collisions with pedestrians should not result in serious or even fatal injuries. An integral part is a new design of a modern driver’s cabin with an innovative way of controlling the vehicle.

The department also cooperates with several universities – UMPRUM, CTU, UWB.

What is especially important when working with students is the feedback and contact with reality that our department provide students. Škoda representatives, on the other hand, can draw inspiration from innovative ideas and a fresh approach.
